Field paths, woodland and minor road, 1200ft of ascent overall – some relatively steep ascents but all short. Dunmallard hill fort summit is an interesting optional extra in the last half mile.
Tuesday's walk from Pooley Bridge takes us over varied terrain with lake and hill views throughout. The undulating route initially follows the Ullswater Way to Bennethead then diverts below Little Mell Fell, through woodland and farmland to Sparket and Hutton John, some quiet road walking, return path along the escarpment to Dacre. Option in the last half mile to climb Dunmallard Hill (hill fort) but this can easily be avoided! A shade over 9 miles and about 1200ft of ascent overall (Dunmallard adds another 200ft). A few stiles, some a little awkward. You may be lucky and find free on road parking in Pooley near the church, alternatively the cheapest pay car park is the signed picnic site area behind the Sun Inn. (£4 per day - honesty box). Wherever you park, meet in the village centre in front of the Crown Inn. Did I mention the mud? There's plenty of that!
