Overview

One legacy of all of the recent rain is the amount of water feeding into local waterfalls making them quite spectacular and the Rhaeadr Ddu (the Black Waterfall) at Gallwyd , is no exception. We can admire this from vantage points after first crossing the A470 and ascending  alongside of the River Camlan. We will then continue up through woodland onto open boggy pasture to visit the ruins of the Cefn Coch gold mine. It is here that we shall have a combined coffee stop and lunch break giving plenty of time to admire the 360 degree views and to also explore the remains of the mill and water pits dating from the gold mining operations which reached their height in the latter part of the 19th century. Our route will then continue through open woodlands and across pastures before descending down a rocky path to rejoin the outward track and return to the car park. Care will need to be taken on paths which will be slippery with rocks hidden by leaves but overall this is a moderate walk with a total ascent of around 600 feet.
