We'll meet in Rivington Village before walking through the parkland and tracks of the local country estate.
There will be a steady climb up towards the old terraced gardens. These were designed for Lord Leverhulme in around 1905 and contained summerhouses, an ornamental lake and a pigeon tower. Over the past few years there has been lots of restoration work carried out, which we will explore as we walk through.
From here we'll climb up to Rivington Pike, an old 12th-century hill beacon with fantastic views. On a good day we should be able to see Blackpool Tower, Manchester and the Welsh Hills.
Descending back onto the estate, we'll head through parkland and follow a path towards the replica of Liverpool Castle, which sits by the edge of a reservoir. From here it'll be a flat walk along paths back to the start, where we'll have an (optional) drink at the local brewery or visit a cafe.
Please book onto the walk via e-mail or text.
For those on public transport I would recommend the train to Blackrod and a taxi to the start. There should also be the option to catch the train to Horwich Parkway, before taking the bus to Rivington.
