Rowlands Gill
This is a moderate circular route of approximately 5 miles, between Rowlands Gill and Lintz Green. From the start point, we head out in a SW direction, briefly joining the Derwent Walk. We then head uphill through Scaife’s Wood, where the path is steep and muddy in places. Sticks and gaiters may be useful. The path levels out but continues to gently ascend to Middle Friarside. There is a short stretch of field walking and then the path descends to cross the Derwent Walk, and through woodland near Lintzford. We climb back up towards the old railway path: the route had to be revised at this point because a section of the Derwent Walk is temporarily closed, to allow bridge repairs, over the Fogoes Burn. For this reason, we follow the bridle path up to Lintz Green and return via the same path. From there, we follow the Derwent Walk NE, back towards Rowlands Gill.
After the walk, refreshments will be available at the Lintzford Garden Centre, NE39 1DG, on the A694, just over a mile away in a westerly direction.
