An interesting undulating walk along trails, tracks and across fields in attractive countryside close to Hardwick Hall. The walk starts from the Rowthorne Trail picnic site car park. Rowthorne Trail is one of several trails close by which used to be railway lines linking the many collieries in the area. All the pits have now disappeared and, with some encouragement, much of the area has been allowed to go back to nature with several nature reserves and a Site of Special Scientific Interest nearby. Rowthorne Local Nature Reserve is great for wildlife with habitats of mature oak and ash woodlands, wildflower meadows, limestone grassland terraces and pools and wetlands.
