Overview

From Tavistock, we take the King’s Way, and the route of the disused London and South Western railway to Harford Bridge. We’ll head towards Mary Tavy, then on to Peter Tavy via Longtimber Tor, before climbing to the flank of Cox Tor. Weather permitting, we’ll enjoy fabulous views! Our lunch spot will be after our climb, at Prowtytown rocks. It’s almost all downhill after that, through Moortown, across Whitchurch down, and our final descent into Tavistock.

Terrain is a mix of rough tussocks, moorland tracks, fields, woodland paths and lanes. There are toilets about 5 minutes after the start of our walk in Tavistock at Bedford Square. Dogs are welcome, but on the section between Harford Bridge and Mary Tavy, there are a few difficult stiles which don’t have “dog gates”.

We’ll need to keep up a good pace throughout the walk to return in daylight.

Start point is the free car park at Pixon Lane. It’s just down the hill from the Market Inn and is on the same side of the road as the Market Inn. From the road, there are signs to the Squash Club and King’s at the car park entrance. This isn’t an official car park but is used extensively by locals. There is a pay and display car park (Riverside) which is almost opposite but that car park is not the start point
