A moderate 8 mile walk with a mixture of woodland, fields and some very quiet roads. There will be mud in places at this time of year, so you might want to wear your gaiters and bring a stick if you use one. We begin the walk on the Bowburn South Ind. Estate, DH6 5AD, and walk back south along the main road for a very short distance before turning right into a wooded plantation (previously the site of Bowburn pit heap), eventually arriving at Hett Mill. The last water mill here was demolished for the railway in the 1870s, but there had been mills along the beck since 1180. We now head further west into Tursdale wood, probably our muddiest bit, before eventually turning south and making a steady ascent across fields towards the small road heading up to Hett village. We will have an early lunch here and look out for Dave Marshall relaxing somewhere! After lunch, we will head east passing Falls Farm, and then South East past Broom Hill farm, before heading northwards near Tursdale, back towards Bowburn. At several points throughout the route, you can see the Amazon warehouse on the horizon, hence the name of the walk.
Dave Marshall has kindly offered to provide the option of a shorter walk.
Directions to the start point:
Heading south on the A1M, exit at junction 61 (A177) and take the 4th exit at the roundabout on to the A177, Durham Road, to Bowburn. After about 120 metres, turn left just after the traffic lights on to Bowburn South Ind. Estate and continue up to the end of the double yellow lines.
