The second largest non-nuclear explosion in history occurred near Hanbury in 1944, through the accidental detonation of nearly 4000 tonnes of high explosive. Sadly 70 lives were lost in an explosion that was heard in London. We will see the resulting 300 m diameter crater and the memorial stone. We will also have views from the low hills, and glimpses of the ruins of Tutbury Castle.
Most of the walk is on the flat or on gentle slopes; there is one steep grassy path down.
Please book on the walk by messaging the leader using the mobile number and specifying whether arriving by car or train. Those coming from Loughborough by train should take the 08.47, changing in Derby and arriving at Tutbury and Hatton at 10.00. Return journeys are at 7 min past the hour (probably 16.07). The car park is about 12 min walk from the station. The return fare from Loughborough is £19 (full) or £12.65 (railcard). Due to staff shortage at the ticket office it will not be possible to purchase group tickets on the day of the walk.
