From Llanthony we follow Beacons Way south to the 'garreg dial' continuing on Gaer Road to Twyn y Gaer. Using the road we walk down to cross the valley floor before climbing again using an old lane 'unsuitable for motor vehicles'. We then meet the road to Hatterrall Common & Bryngaer Pen-twyn. Our return route is Offa's Dyke path/Beacons Way & down to Llanthony.
We walk ridges on either side of the valley, some road walking & some rough paths but extensive views on a fine day. We visit the hillforts of Twyn y Gaer & Pen-Twyn (Bryngaer Pen-Twyn), the latter described as the largest in the area.
Bring packed lunch & water/fluids to drink.
