This walk will be led by Jack Hutchinson. Ascent is 1400 ft so it is locally graded moderate plus.
This will be a fine scenic and varied walk with stretches of moorland, fields and woodland with several seep ups and downs. There are plenty good solid tracks with occasional rougher sections and possibly some short sections of overgrown path. The walk starts with a descent into Newtondale followed by a steep ascent before arriving at Skelton Tower for an early morning break. After over 2 miles of gradually rising moorland we reach Havern Dale. We follow a narrow and sometimes tricky path high above this dale to rejoin Newtondale.
Lunch will be taken at Newtondale Halt at the almost exact half way point. There follows a steady climb of 400 ft to reach the highest point of the day at just under 800 ft. A mile of easy walking is followed by several steep ups and downs via Raindale and Middle Head back to the start.
