Setting off at 10.00am, this is an interesting walk which takes in an abandoned chapel, historic parklands, ancient roads and of course, the infamous site of the Battle of Towton, where on a bitterly cold March day in 1461, the river ran red with the blood of thousands of defeated Lancastrians. If we have time, we will also call at Saxton church in passing, where the defeated Lancastrian, Lord Dacre, was buried along with his horse. Much of the route is on easy, good tracks, but expect some road walking, a couple of stiles, a few rutted field tracks (muddy after rain), and a lot of history.
Dog friendly (including the pub!) please note, there are usually sheep or horses in a couple of fields we pass through, so dogs must be kept on lead and under control.
The Crooked Billet is open for refreshments/meals all day (including breakfast).
