Weetslade - Sunday, 23rd February. A flat walk, apart from one hill at the start. Approx 9.5 miles....but certainly not strenuous. There are some possible patches of mud at times, but many good tracks. The option of a shorter walk will also be available. We start walking in Weetslade country park, with an early gentle incline up a hill, which has beautiful 360 degree views, including views over the next part of walk. We head down the bank and along the Heritage Way on the edge of Wideopen. Next, we walk along Little Waters (part of the Seaton Burn) into a nature reserve. Then we cross over the A1, and into the peaceful Big Waters Country Park. Within the park, we can use stepping stones (for the more adventurous!), or a bridge, and we might see planes coming overhead into Newcastle airport, as we walk along the banks of the lake.
The next part of walk takes us out of Big Waters, and much closer to the perimeter of the airport. Planes might well fly close overhead, as we have lunch!
We enter Havanna Nature Reserve, near Hazelrigg, passing a lake and a cordoned off area for red squirrels. You never know...maybe we'll be lucky to spot one! It is here that we may encounter mud!
Exiting the nature reserve, we walk through some housing, through the A1 underpass, and through a modern housing estate, before re-entering Weetslade Country Park. We walk along the outer edge of the park as we make our way back to our cars.
