Walkers on to of a rocky hill top

Walking in Bolton since 1968

Our group cover the townships in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton - Bolton, Westhoughton, Horwich and Farnworth.

We formed in 1968 and for over 50 years have been promoting the activities and the philosophy of the Ramblers Association within our local community.

Our activities

Our led walks programmes are designed to encourage and inspire the public and members of the Ramblers to enjoy the countryside. These walks include weekly Thursday, mid-week and monthly weekend walks and range in length from a short, leisurely 3 - 5 miles, to 9 - 12 miles in the local area. Coach rambles provide three levels of walks from 5 -15 miles around northern England.

We also organise a small group of volunteers to carry out monthly maintenance and clearance work of the network of local footpaths.

Campaign with us - protect the places we walk

Walking is a simple pleasure that should be open to everyone, so we campaign to remove barriers to walking and we protect the places we love to wander.

Our walks

We want the public and members of the Ramblers to enjoy the countryside and so produce and advertise our led walks programmes. The programme includes weekly Thursday and mid-week evening and day rambles, monthly weekend walks all based in the local area. The length of walk ranges from short 3-5 miles to 9-12 miles. Coach rambles provide three levels of walks from 5-15 miles around northern England including the Lake District, Westmorland and the Yorkshire Dales and down to North Wales and the Peak District. We participate with other organisations in promoting the benefits to health and well-being by going out walking.

Protecting our footpaths

We work within the framework of the Ramblers national organisation to protect and maintain the Public Rights of Way (PROW) within the Bolton and surrounding area. This includes participating in the restoring and creating of new paths through Ramblers’ campaigns, such as “DLYW” and the Greater Manchester initiative of the “BEE network of paths”. We liaise with Bolton MBC and other community organisations to ensure the footpaths remain accessible and open to the public. The Footpath Secretary is responsible for scrutinising planning applications received to ensure there are no infringements of the PROW and to make objections, where applicable, to safeguard the footpaths within our community. The Bolton Group organises a small group of volunteers to carry out monthly maintenance and clearance work of the network of local footpaths. We work closely with Bolton MBC on the work to be done. Shared funding with local councils is available for improvement projects or when stiles, steps etc. fall into disrepair and need replacing.
