Walking in Hertfordshire and North Middlesex
This area of Hertfordshire and the northern boroughs of London has a wide variety of attractive countryside. Rolling empty farmland in the east, chalk downland on the Chiltern Hills, extensive woodlands, meandering chalk streams. It is studded with picturesque villages and ancient market towns.
Beyond the built-up southern part, there are narrow lanes with little traffic and an extensive, well maintained network of rights of way. It's great walking country. Our London boroughs can also take advantage of easy access to explore London.
Our walking community
The nine Groups in our Area each have their own style, and run varied programmes of walks. Our elected Area Council supports our Groups, and brings them together for events, such as our Area Walk Day. Use the links to our Groups below to find out more about their upcoming walks and events.
The Area Footpaths Committee helps protect and enhance the rights of way in Hertfordshire, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, and helps protect the countryside in which we walk through the planning system. The work on footpaths is organised at the Area level. Over 50 volunteers act as local footpath secretaries, each looking after one or more parishes within Hertfordshire or a London Borough. We are always looking for new volunteers interested in joining us. Visit our website to find out more.
