This walk is following on from last years 3P's walk through the villages of (Pantyscallog, Pontsarn and Pontsticill ).
Join us this time, walking above these villages and more!
Starting at the high abandoned village of Pengarnduu near Merthyr Tydfil . We follow a disused railway line /quarry track, used by the long gone village quarry workers, above the village of Pantyscallog.
Near here we reach an amazing viewpoint ( as promised last year) above Pontsticill Reservoir, with far reaching views of the Beacons and the reservoirs well known 'plughole'.
We'll stop here for a coffee break amongst the back drop of Tywnau Gwynion Quarry. With views of Morlais Castle and quarry in the distance.
Gradually descending a grass and tufty common, we head (with some road walking) towards Morlais Castle to climb / scramble up over limestone quarry rocks, following some steep sheep trails up to the castle ruins and intact crypt . Here we'll have our lunch stop, while admiring the 360 degree views of the wonderful Merthyr area.
Heading back down is much easier, along some of the perimeter of Morlais CastleGolf Club, then through the village of Pantyscallog with pavement walking. Until we reach a lane back up to our carpark at Pengarnddu.
There will be history snippets on the way and some modern day, added extra surprises.
Due to the rocky climb / scramble plus steep narrow sheep trails to reach the castle during the middle of the walk, we have classed it as strenuous.
