Although this is a bit further afield than we usually travel, Avebury and the surrounding landscape is well worth the journey. This walk will start from the NT car park at Avebury and visit several of the ancient nearby sites. We will follow the footpath beside the incipient River Kennet to look at the mysterious Silbury Hill, then cross the A4 to climb up to the well preserved West Kennet Long Barrow. From there we’ll head east to pass the site of the Sanctuary stone circle. Following the Ridgeway north we will then turn west towards the Avebury circle and embankments. We’ll make a short detour here (optional) down the Avenue. Then lunch in the circle itself. (6.5 miles so far)
At this point you can decide to stop and continue to explore on your own, visit the NT cafe and shop or just absorb the spiritual atmosphere. For those wanting a longer walk, we will continue through the village and do another circular walk (4 miles) to Windmill Hill, a causewayed enclosure with associated burial mounds.
Bring refreshments for a coffee stop and a picnic lunch. Lunch can be purchased at the NT cafe or pub in the village.
Avebury Manor (NT) is closed at present due to flooding - please check website nearer the day if you are interested in visiting this 16th century manor house.
