Overview

Meet at the free long stay Barton Hill Car Park, Bleke Street, Shaftesbury SP7 8QA for 10.00am. We will leave promptly to go to the Town Hall in Shaftesbury to take the No 29 bus to Ludwell leaving at 10.30 and arriving at 10.40 (BUS TIMES FOR 2025 NEED CHECKING) The route starts with a steady climb to Charlton Down and a car park where the Cranborne Droves Way starts (we will not be doing any of it this walk). Then it is a ridge walk along the Ox Drove to descend to East Melbury and across a valley to Melbury Abbas. This is followed by the second big climb of the day to Melbury Beacon. Then it is down to West Melbury and Cann. The steady climb back to Shaftesbury starts at Frenches Mill and the final stage is up the famous Gold Hill, hopefully getting back before the tea shops close. There are plenty of stiles on this walk but the views should compensate. A classic Dorset walk.
