Overview

This walk takes us from Mill Street in Ashwell southwards to Bygrave Woods at the top of Gravelpit Hill.  The outward leg embraces Arbury Banks and Ash Hill. The return route includes part of Cat Ditch and Partridge Hill.

The walk was popular last summer when we led it for the first time after the new bridleway from Ash Hill to the top of Gravelpit Hill had been added to the Definitive Map for Hertfordshire.  The route of the bridleway is now signposted on the ground and we have been requested to repeat the walk.

The story is outlined on Page 13 of the last Stile magazine (Issue 64, December 2013). Evidence for the bridleway was found on several historical maps, including the Newnham Tithe Map of 1847.
