Prior booking essential - THIS WALK IS NOW FULL - all places taken
This walk provides an opportunity to explore parts of Birmingham on foot so will involve numerous stops to visit markets, buildings, cafés, pubs, etc. The website, urbanrambles.org, includes a map of the route and a good description of what there is to see on it. Consequently, the walk will take much longer than the route’s six to eight miles would indicate. Our recce took around six hours (we cut the route short, omitting a loop of canal).
The walk will be led in small groups (ideally around six per group) to facilitate the non-walking activities. Currently our leaders are John Ga, Margaret & Nick. It will start at New Street Station by the giant bull and will end there.
The easiest travel for most people is probably by train from Penkridge (where parking is free) or Stafford. The first off-peak train from Penkridge is at 09:15 and the walks will start at 10:00am or earlier if a group is complete. For the return, the last off-peak train before peak fares apply is at 16:34 which allows some six hours for the ramble. Note that three or more people travelling together can qualify for a group travel concession, which I believe, may work out cheaper even if you have a senior rail card (needs to be checked).
It is essential that you book a place if you want to come. Numbers will be limited and places filled on a first come first served basis.
There will be at least two refreshment stops for elevenses and lunch. You can bring your own refreshments if you prefer not to use the cafés.
