The walk passes a neolithic long barrow, an Iron Age and subsequently Roman fort, a Norman castle and Victorian and Twentieth Century engineering. We shall pause to give time to look at information boards as we walk. If your preference is for sustained walking this walk may not be for you.
We start at the magnificent Caldicot Castle which is well worth time to explore before or after the walk. There's a small cafe for drinks, cakes and ice creams but it does not serve lunch - sandwiches, salads etc.
It's not part of the walk but if you want to make a day of it in Caldicot, then I've heard very good things about Dewstow Historic Gardens and Grottoes at Dewstow House. It was shut when we pre-walked the route - last entry is 3.30pm. Parking is free. Admission is £8 for most of us (£9 full price).
