From the Dinas Castle inn carpark, we walk up to an iron age fort & Norman castle, one of the highest in England and Wales, then on to the Dragon’s Back ridge. Heading upwards we turn north away from Waun Fach then drop down toward Grwyne Fawr Reservoir and across a foot bridge to climb to the peak of Pen-y-Gadair Fawr, which is a long but mostly fairly gentle up hill. A well defined paved footpath takes us to Waun Fach (811 m), the highest peak in the Black Mountains. Finally we descend via Pen Trumau to reach the car park. If the weather is kind, there are magnificent views of the Brecon Beacons, and the singular Black Mountain to the west, with rolling farmland stretching away in the other direction. The vista during the final descent is a particular favourite.
