Overview

A moderate ramble with a mixture of terrain including interesting geology and historic points of interest.  We shall head west along the clifftop, then inland up Southdown and Pyle, past Gladices turning east through Chale Green, up to the north end of St Catherine's Down to pay a visit to Hoy Monument then along the ridge south to the Pepperpot (St Catherine's Oratory) and back down to Chale.  New walkers welcomed; no one left behind.

We shall be passing through pasture where there may be cattle or sheep grazing, so dogs must be on a lead.  We shall also have to walk a short way on a busy road where we shall walk in single file.  There may be mud, especially on the way up to St Catherine's Down, and some slopes are quite steep.  There are some stiles.  We meet at the Car Park behind the Scout Hall on Church Place, Chale, PO38 2HB SZ484778.  The walk ends in the same place.  The Wight Mouse Inn is nearby if anyone wishes to eat lunch after the walk (bookings recommended).  Please bring refreshments, preferably hot drinks, for the way round.  Please note start time, (9.30), which is to allow for the arrival of No.6 bus from Newport (Chale Church stop).

New walkers welcome. If you are new to the Ramblers you can just turn up for any of our walks, unless we specify otherwise.  We invite you to come along for three walks as a non-member.

Additional Notes
