Part 2 of our Martin's Marvellous Masts series.
This is a linear Newport to Brighstone walk(10am start) -10 miles (or stop at 7).
Following on from the most educational walk some of us did up to the Rowridge Mast last year, another walk inspired by the Isle of Wight's transmitter masts - this time the one on Chillerton Down, where we hope to be further enlightened with some more masterful information. Then heading down into the village of Shorwell for a short lunch (or pub) stop, and onwards to Brighstone and its dragon tree. This walk has some uphills and downhills - and some stunning views, weather permitting.
This is a linear walk from Newport bus station. For a slightly shorter walk you could meet us en route at the Priory carpark if you wish, which would be approx 10.30am. If you propose to do that then please let us know to look out for you, and please be prompt, as we won’t be able to wait. Walking from Newport to Brighstone, back by bus . Distance approx 10 miles. There would also be a potential option to stop in Shorwell, which is approx 7 miles. Either way (unless you car share / shuffle) it would be the same No 12 bus back i.e. the 14.59 from Brighstone (15.05 from Shorwell), so if you opt for the 7 mile distance you can have a nice long sit down at the Crown Inn.
Public toilets (free) at start in Newport, and end in Brighstone. Also at the Crown Inn in Shorwell if you are visiting the pub.
By car
Park in Newport (and if you are car-share/shuffling, the second car at either Brighstone, or Shorwell for the shorter distance). Meet outside Newport library.
By public transport
Meet outside Newport library, which is right by the bus station.
