Overview

Please note that this is a different walk from the one advertised on the Trifold leaflet. The Glen Sax Walk might be offered later in the year on a longer day

We walk north over farm tracks to Yetholm Mains Farm, beyond which we turn east along farm tracks to an old farm building at Elsdonburn Shank. We drop down to cross a burn from which we climb to Ringchesters hillfort, which offers 360 degree views.

We follow an easy farm track to the foot of Coldsmouth Hill, which offers further fine views after a stiff ascent to the bronze age cairns on its summit. We descend through forestry to visit a further hillfort and viewpoint on Burnt Humbleton Hill, from which we follow the Border southward, via Eccles Cairn, before crossing back to Scotland to visit the Stob Stanes, where the gipsy King and Queen were traditionally crowned.

We return to Halterburn by the high Pennine Way, from which there will be an option to climb Green Humbleton and its hillfort for further spectacular views.

Full hillwalking gear is required, and car sharing is recommended. Please be aware that cattle were encountered on a recent recce, although they posed no problem.
