This is a stunningly beautiful, just under 9 miles, B grade, strenuous walk. Heading out from Largs, it takes in Gogo Glen and Noddsdale Glen. It is very peaceful and quiet with some stunning views over Largs (but from a different perspective) and Cumbrae and Arran.
Many of you will have done variations of the walk but this one is a first for the group. It was created ‘on the hoof’ during the recce by Iain with his encyclopaedic route knowledge of the whole of Ayrshire. Thank you, Iain.
We’ll have our first stop at Greeto Bridge and lunch at Noddsdale Burn.
We will meet at Morrison's, Stevenston at 09.00am for 09.10am departure and start walking at 10am. For car sharer info, the round trip is 32 miles.
The start point is Aubery Crescent, KA30 8PR. Drive through town past the shops and the main carpark on the seafront. Go a little further and turn left at the Episcopal Church on the corner into Aubery Crescent. Slight right takes you to the free street parking.
If you are travelling to Largs by train, take the 08.45 from Glasgow Central which passes through eg Saltcoats at 09.29, arriving in Largs at 09.49. As the meet point is a fair bit from the station, walk round to Indigo Eats restaurant at 68 Gallowgate, KA30 8LZ and we’ll meet you there.
We’ll pass through the town up to the gate access into Gogo Glen, taking a left fork in the path so that Biggin Hill is on our right then ahead is the Meeting of the Waters and Mount Stuart. Our first stop is Geeto Bridge where we can sit on the rocks by the water.
A short retrace of our steps, then it’s up a track and a flight of steep steps to Auchenmaid Crags we then go off track a bit to a small slope to look down on to Knock Hill in front of the water. Carrying on to cross a stretch of slightly boggy, tussocky but springy moorland up toward Langley Hill. The sea is now visible and Rowan Tree Hill to our right.
We now head down to a group of trees for our lunch stop. There’s a fence to negotiate and a jump over Noddsdale Burn or step over a boulder in the water. Girtley Hill is now facing us.
Post lunch, there’s one more fence to clamber over and a very boggy patch to get round. Following a line of trees we head down towards the sea. This gives us a different view of Largs over to our left. Onwards down a path with Ward Crags on our left, more track then we see Chinese Lake below us. This was part of a reservoir that fed the old mill further down. Turning off to the right we reach the lake. Following a diverted route away from Noddsdale House takes us through grassy area out on to Brisbane Glen Road.
It's tarmac and pavement passing Brisbane Cemetery and smart houses for the next 20 to 30 minutes back to the car.
