An invigorating walk through the scenic Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where rolling hills lead to splendid views from the escarpment.
The walk passes by the small Guildford Castle and its charming gardens, historically significant as its date back to the 11th century. From there, we ascend towards Pewley Down, rewarded by magnificent views across Chantries Hill. A gentle descent brings us towards St Martha’s Hill, where expansive views of the Surrey countryside await. At this point, we tackle a long and steeper, narrower trail – trekking poles are helpful here – descending past the borders of Chilworth Manor Vineyard and through part of the historic Chilworth Gunpowder Works.
Next, we continue along sandy trails through the delightful Blackheath Common (where we will have lunch), with conifer trees, heather and gorse; this section offers a peaceful and distinctly wild feel before we pick up the Downs Link path towards Chinthurst Hill and its 1930 Tower. On a clear day, this spot offers remarkable views, even as far as the Devil’s Punch Bowl.
Finally, we take the Way-South Path, tracing the Wey and Arun Canal as it joins the meandering River Wey, which leads us back toward Guildford, completing this journey.
The pace of the walk will be fast enough to ensure we are in Guildford by 4pm.
