Overview

The Ashford Hangers near Hawkley is one of Hampshire's most beautiful areas. It has been given the name "Little Switzerland" due to its fantastic scenery - and the hills! Much of the area is covered in trees, many of them beeches soaring high above ones head. The word 'hanger' comes from the Old English for wooded slope. This walk starts in Hawkley village and does a circuit including Hawkley Hanger, Wealdon Edge Hangers and Shoulder of Mutton Hill. There is over 400m of ascent in the circuit which is why the walk is just 8 miles.

There is a small car park by the village hall, opposite the church (voluntary donation of £2 per car - please bring cash). There is also space for parking around the village green. Space is limited so car sharing is advisable. Hawkley village is accessed via some narrow, sunken lanes. I suggest that the best route to follow is to take the A32 to East Tisted, turn right at the church, after 3 kms take a turning to the right, opposite Hullham Lane, follow this lane for another 3 kms to a staggered crossroad and turn right into Hawkley village. the car park is on the right opposite the church.
