Overview

A lovely walk along the west side of Hayling Island - with the options of ice cream, coffee & even a swim if the weather is favourable!

We will start from the bridge and follow the shore line around to the ferry point, with fantastic views across to Eastney & Portsmouth, passing the old railway bridge, the oyster beds (which is a habitat for many sea birds) & we will be able to see the remains of the Mulberry Harbour which was floated across to France to support the D Day landings in 1944.

At a lovely open beach we will stop for lunch - with the chance for a dip in the sea (or at least a paddle) if anyone fancies it!

After lunch we will have the opportunity to have an ice cream & coffee, before we return to the car park following the Billy trail.

After the walk there is the option of drinks at the Ship Inn at Langstone where there is a nice beer garden.

This is a flat walk with no hills or stiles.

However, the morning stretch involves a section along the shore at low tide which will be slippy with seaweed, and also requires clambering across a number of jetties & suchlike. Following this there is a long stretch on shingle beach which can be tiring to walk along. Boots are strongly recommended.

Please bring refreshments for a morning coffee break & lunch. Around the route there are toilets and a number of outlets to purchase food, drink & ice cream.

Dogs are welcome with well behaved owners. There is a stretch of beach where dogs are not permitted but we will avoid that section during the walk.

Please remember to bring a towel & change of clothes if you wish to partake in the optional swim!

The car park is located opposite the petrol station just after the bridge. This is an SMALL car park so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE car share where possible - it is unlikely we will be able to double park here. If the car park fills up (which is very likely) then there are laybys on Northney Road or residential parking nearby on New Cut. Hayling Island is served by a regular bus service from Havant (where there is also a train station) so this walk can be accessed via public transport.
