A lovely walk along the west side of Hayling Island - with the options of ice cream, coffee & even a swim if the weather is favourable!
We will start from the bridge and follow the shore line around to the ferry point, with fantastic views across to Eastney & Portsmouth, passing the old railway bridge, the oyster beds (which is a habitat for many sea birds) & we will be able to see the remains of the Mulberry Harbour which was floated across to France to support the D Day landings in 1944.
At a lovely open beach we will stop for lunch - with the chance for a dip in the sea (or at least a paddle) if anyone fancies it!
After lunch we will have the opportunity to have an ice cream & coffee, before we return to the car park following the Billy trail.
After the walk there is the option of drinks at the Ship Inn at Langstone where there is a nice beer garden.
This is a flat walk with no hills or stiles.
However, the morning stretch involves a section along the shore at low tide which will be slippy with seaweed, and also requires clambering across a number of jetties & suchlike. Following this there is a long stretch on shingle beach which can be tiring to walk along. Boots are strongly recommended.
Please bring refreshments for a morning coffee break & lunch. Around the route there are toilets and a number of outlets to purchase food, drink & ice cream.
Dogs are welcome with well behaved owners. There is a stretch of beach where dogs are not permitted but we will avoid that section during the walk.
Please remember to bring a towel & change of clothes if you wish to partake in the optional swim!
