The walk starts outside Stocksbridge Rugby Club, Coal Pit Lane, high above the town. We enter Hollin Busk Lane for a short distance before joining a surfaced path across fields to reach the village of Bolsterstone (toilets). We then follow Heads Lane along the ridge with great views over the Ewden Valley to the left, Stocksbridge to the right and the moors ahead. This lane eventually becomes a track before we leave it to cross grassland to reach the highest point of the walk, the trig point at The Height which has more great views over the moors. We then skirt Whitwell Moor to reach Long Lane where we take a path above Knoll Brook heading downhill to the Outdoors Activities Centre at Underbank Reservoir. Turning right the walk continues alongside the reservoir and over its embankment to reach and cross Manchester Road. After heading a short distance up Underbank Hill Road we turn right to join a wide, well surfaced, foot/cycle path below the nearby by-pass with its good views over the town. Eventually the path descends to join Hunshelf Road leading down to the Fox Valley Retail Park and the end of the walk.
Take the 10-15 a.m. Number 57 bus service from Flat Street in central Sheffield and alight at a bus stop close to the junctions of Coal Pit Lane, Pennine View and Hollin Busk Lane (opposite the Rugby Club).
Return bus services run from stops on Manchester Road close to Fox Valley.
Refreshments only available at end of walk.
