Kelburn Country Park, Largs. KA29 0BE
Parking charges £5 per car. Walk grade C+. Length 5 miles
This is a reasonably short walk but includes a number of uphill stretches and quite a lot of steps.
At the start we visit the waterfall with it's 2 statues. From there we will have a look at the castle & it's famous mural walls. We then head through the gardens with a number of ancient heritage trees. From there we pick up the Countess Walk from which we get really clear views of Cumbrae & Arran - weather permitting! We continue uphill on the North Estate road until branching off to see the quirky painted boat in a field. We will join a path through beautiful woodland which takes us to the Beech Plateau where we will have an early lunch stop, surrounded by unusual sculptures. It's then an uphill climb to join the estate road again until we reach an old stone bridge. We'll start the downward path here - lots of steps & tree roots here. This path eventually takes us over a bridge above the waterfall & from there, we make our way back to the courtyard and cafe.
RISKS
As there are lots of beech leaves on the paths just now, great care needs to be taken if they are wet. They also hide the tree roots which can cause a fall.
Boots or strong walking shoes are essential
Poles are optional.
