We start in Broxbourne and head south along the eastern edge of Lee Valley. The route takes us via Lower Nazeing and up Clayton Hill, which is categorised as a Tump. We continue all the way to Waltham Abbey, a traditional market town steeped in history with an impressive church and abbey grounds at its centre. The abbey was one of the most prosperous and important abbeys in the country for centuries until it was mostly demolished in 1540 (courtesy of Henry VIII). Archaeological investigations revealed the origins of the church and site date back to between 590 and 690 A.D.

We will stop here for an extended lunch so you're free to explore the grounds and the 12th century Abbey Church, there is a public toilet nearby along with various eateries.

For the 2nd part of the walk, we will return up the west side of Lee Valley through the River Lee Country Park. Stretching between Waltham Abbey and Broxbourne this 1,000-acre park (within a park) straddles the Hertfordshire-Essex border. Formerly old gravel pits its now a unique patchwork of lakes, waterways, and green open spaces.

Much of the walk will be on solid paths, there will be some sections though which can be muddy depending on conditions. Paths often get overgrown with nettles and brambles this time of year, so long trousers are recommended.

Bring a packed lunch and snacks, plus plenty to drink of course.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT - The nearest station is Broxbourne. 7 min (0.3 mi) walk from the meeting point.
