An exhilarating but challenging walk with a steep ascent up Combe Hill from Polegate, a flatter section of ridge walking along the South Downs Way above Eastbourne and a very steep and spectacular descent down from Beachy Head on the Weald Way path. The walk finishes with a stroll along the promenade before ending in time for tea and cakes in the town centre.
Although the second half of the walk is on firm chalk paths or Holywell promenade, the first mile across Polegate meadow can be muddy and the tracks on and off the downs are potentially slippery so poles will be an advantage. Picnic stop along the ridge at Willingdon Hill and coffee, cake and toilets available at Cadence Cafe on Beachy Head. If particularly windy we may detour off the ridge just before Beachy Head.
