Overview

From the car park we ascend Sugar Loaf, starting gradually but getting steeper as we near the summit.  We follow the ridge round to the west descending on a wide grassy path.  After leaving the open moorland we drop right down to the valley bottom to follow the river Grwynne Fawr passing through the village of Llangenny.  We leave the river and make our ascent back to the car park

OS Map OL13 Sugar Loaf National Trust car park. Best approached from the A40. Turn off following the signs to the Sugar Loaf Vineyard. Continue past the vineyard and follow the single track road. at the fork take the right fork which is sign posted to the car park. Follow the road to the car park right to the end with a pillar with a NT sign (don’t stop at the car parking area shortly before that). Note if coming via the 465 from Hereford be aware that Google maps when leaving the A465 at Pentwyn Triley immediately after passing under the railway may try to send you right via some very narrow single track roads with few if any passing places and not very well surfaced. Whilst this cuts off the corner and avoids going into Abergavenny the roads are not very good and if you meet someone coming the other way you (or they). may have to reverse quite a way. You are probably better going into/round Abergavenny heading to the A40 west.
