It is a mostly flat, leisurely, circular walk of approximately 4.5 miles, on the paths and tracks of the Croxdale Estate which has been owned by the Salvin family since the 15th. Century.
There are no stiles, 18 steps and a number of gates. There are a couple of muddy sections so boots are certainly useful.
There are pleasant views across the neighbouring countryside and through some wooded sections.
The meeting point is beside the estate gates next to the old Sunderland Bridge.
To reach the start exit the roundabout beside 'THE HONEST LAWYER' Hotel on the B6300 towards Browney and Crook, then take the first left towards the old bridge and park on the roadside either side of the river. The Estate gates, where we meet, are on the far (South) side of the river.
As there are no toilets at the start or en-route it is suggested that the ones in The Honest Lawyer are used before parking up.
