Turkey Hill and Knowe Dodd
The walk starts just past Coulter village as you pass over the bridge up towards the reservoir (Birthwood Road). There is good parking here.
We walk through the “lambing field” which is currently muddy due to tree harvesting***, and continue up the side of the burn under Culterpark Hill, eventually reaching the telecoms mast before turning sharp left and crossing into a field towards a pretty pond as we crest the ridge. This is a great photo stop if the weather is good, and if we are lucky the lapwings will be back in residence.
Heading towards Turkey Hill, we cross the wall onto a good track built for the new shooting butts. Fine views across both valleys if the weather is good. Option to conquer Turkey Hill or to keep your powder dry for Knowe Dodd – now visible across the saddle.
We descend on a good quad bike track to the top of the old path up Girdle Burn, crossing a new bridge (!) towards Knowe Dodd. More fine views up towards Coulter and Gathersnow.
Descending now along a grassy ridge all the way to the road (walking sticks may help!), passing the shooting butts and following the track down. Finally, reaching the road we walk back down (left) to the cars.
