When we walked this very pleasant route in November 2023 it was generally agreed by the brave drenched few to have been the wettest walk ever.. We did, however, see enough through the driving rain to think it worth doing again at a more clement season.
The walk takes us out of Cranbrook past its well known school, and through open countryside to the picturesque Sissinghurst village, thence through orchards to the eponymous castle where we will stop for an early break, The route continues into open fields, and the trails of the extensive Hemsted Forest, before dropping into the historic village of Benenden where we will picnic on the green with the option of refreshments at the friendly pub.
After lunch we will follow the High Weald Landscape Trail back to Cranbrook initially in the footsteps of the legions along the course of a Roman road before walking through the grounds of Benenden school. We will continue to enjoy the Trail's panoramas until we enter Cranbrook past interesting old buildings and the well preserved windmill, the tallest of its kind in the country. There are numerous coffee shops and an excellent pub to slake one's thirst at the end.
The walk is generally quite flat but still has excellent views over open countryside.
Unfortunately not suitable for dogs.
Please check the website, or contact the leader, for any changes before coming on the walk.
