We leave Sixpenny Handley, pick up the Jubillee Way, crossing the Dorset Cursus, past long barrows and ancient settlements before joining Ackling Dyke.
This is a section of Roman road which runs for 22 miles southwest from Old Sarum to the hill fort at Badbury Rings.
Much of the road exists as an exceptionally large embankment (agger), up to 50 ft wide and 6 ft high. This is much wider than most Roman roads. This would have been visible from a great distance and must have been intended to impress the native population, as it was unnecessary from an engineering viewpoint. It provided a rapid transit route for soldiers across Cranborne Chase.
We walk North along the Dyke for 3 miles before joining the Hardy way back to our cars.
Be aware that we will have to cross the busy A354 twice so bring your high viz.
Packed lunch.
