Walking in Mid Wiltshire

Our group covers the area in central Wiltshire bounded by the Marlborough Downs in the north and Salisbury Plain to the south. It includes the historic towns of Devizes and Pewsey as well as several attractive villages. The Kennet and Avon Canal with its famous flight of locks at Caen Hill extends through Devizes and onwards through Pewsey.

The immediate countryside gives rise to many walking opportunities including the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Pewsey Vale and the Marlborough Downs. Long distance paths include the Mid-Wilts Way and the Wessex Ridgeway. Two of Wiltshire's chalk white horses are visible on hillsides around Devizes.

Our walking community

The group meets weekly on Sundays and Thursdays for morning, afternoon or all day walks. We have a varied programme of shorter and longer walks to suit most abilities. These may be in the immediate locality or some distance away. Occasionally there may be walks arranged at other times.

Traditionally the group has a walking week away in May, a weekend in September and an awayday in June. Other social events are also included in our programme throughout the year. We are a comparatively small group and walkers from other groups and visitors are welcome to join us.
