Join me on this walk, which is also part of the National Forest Walking Festival to the villages of Heather, Newton Burgoland, Snarestone and Swepstone. Walking over Farmland, Meadowland and Woodland, this moderate and mainly level walk takes in the rolling countryside of North West Leicestershire. The walk is mainly on footpaths with a couple of minor road sections.
There are a number of stiles throughout the walk
Toilets and refreshments available at the end of the walk.
Dogs are welcome on the walk but it should be noted that at a number of stiles, dogs will have to be lifted over so larger dogs may find it difficult.
From Heather we walk to Newton Burgoland. 1940 saw evacuees escorted there from Coventry, Birmingham and London to avoid the bombings and Gopsall Hall was requisitioned as a barracks for British soldiers who regularly visited the Belper Arms, the oldest pub in Leicestershire. Snarestone is next where the River Mease runs through the village. That and the Ashby canal are both SSSI. Swepstone is next, first documented in the Domesday Book and then we head back to Heather to complete the walk.
