Join me as i leave Straw Bridge Lake and meander through countryside on mostly well defined paths to shipley Park Estate, where we will have a short coffee break.
Shipley Estate was a 14th century hunting lodge, situated on the hill side.Although the orginal Hall was demolished in 1943 due to subsidence caused by extensive coal mining in the area, some of the structure remains.
After walking through The Grounds,we head across to The Erewash Valley Way To Bennerley viaduct.
After circling This amazing feat of an engineering structure and passing under it,we head up onto it for extensive views of The local surroundings & look down on The river Erewash that passes beneath.
Bennerley Viaduct was built Between 1877-1878,to carry the Gt Northern Railway on The frairgate line extension across The valley. All The wrought & cast Iron was produced in Derby by Eastwood & Swingler, and put together like a meccano set using over half a million rivets.
After lunch here,we head back on a short section of The canal, then through Ilkeston to complete our walk
