Did you know, there are 33 named oak trees in Savernake Forest? No, well starting from the Postern Hill car park this will be your opportunity to “bag” 18 of those trees in one walk. Whilst many of the Beech trees are over 200 years old the oak trees are substantially older with Big Belly Oak and the King of Limbs being in existence before William the Conqueror’s invasion in 1066.
So come and explore the Forest and learn something of its history including the origin of its original name, Safernoc, a connection to the Battle of Hastings, Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, madness, and …possibly even glimpse the headless woman on a white Horse.
This is a forest walk along paths and tracks, some of which are overgrown and will be muddy following the recent rain. You will need to be aware of roots and branches which can become trip hazards. So please dress appropriately for the weather and the likely conditions underfoot for what is hoped will be an interesting and “slightly out of the ordinary” walk.
