Overview

This straightforward, picturesque walk is basically a long stretch of golden beach sandwiched between two busy coastal towns. We start the walk from Irvine Railway Station down to Irvine Harbour, along the sandy Irvine Bay onto Barassie Shore and finishing at Troon.

After alighting from the train we head down towards the harbour passing several cafes, an Art Centre and The Scottish Maritime Museum. Irvine was a major seaport till Port Glasgow was constructed in the 17th century. Heading to the beach we pass the remains of the Bridge of Scottish Invention, part of an abandoned millennium project, once providing a pedestrian access across the river to The Big Idea Museum which closed in 2003.

We then follow the beach along the dunes and make a gentle ascent up to The Stone Dragon at Irvine Beach Park for stunning views of The Firth of Clyde and Islands (depending on weather conditions). The Stone Dragon is known locally as 'The Great Protector of Irvine'. After descending back down to the beach we continue our stroll along the sands, onto Barassie Shore and into Troon.
