Join the CYW and Berkshire Walkers for a hilly walk (with quite a few hills) in the Chiltern Hills. As well as hills, this 12 mile circular walk from Ibstone features scenic views, pretty woodland trails, a windmill and (hopefully) even a pub stop.

The walk starts with a pleasant downhill stretch through woodland followed by a stroll through some fields of sheep. Do not let this lull you into a false sense of security however, as pretty soon we will start the first climb of the day through Blackmoor Wood and into the village of Northend. Other than a couple of uphill blips, the next couple of miles are generally all downhill, passing through woodland trails and open fields.

It’s then up our next short hill of the day to reach our lunch stop and weather permitting some lovely views. Continuing through Turville Heath, and after another short climb there is then a nice long downhill stretch eventually reaching the village of Turville. Fingers crossed there will be space in the garden of the Bull and Butcher pub allowing for a refuelling stop. We will probably need this, as soon afterwards it’s up the steepest hill of the day and past the famous Cobstone Windmill. This windmill was built in 1816 and has since featured in many tv shows and films.

No sooner have we finally made it to the top of the hill, then it’s straight back down again the other side. The final 3 miles of the walk are all uphill - starting very gradually at first before getting steeper as we approach Ibstone and the end of the walk. In case it has not been obvious from the above description, although not mountainous by any stretch of the imagination, this walk does feature a fair number of hills (some of which are quite steep) and we will be walking at a moderate pace, so please do bear this in mind.

Please bring plenty of water and a packed lunch. Dress for the weather and bring sunscreen if it’s likely to be sunny.

Meet at Ibstone Common (opposite Ibstone cricket club).  Car parking is available on the road along the edge of the Ibstone Common and in the cricket club lay-by.
