The walk on Saturday 16 November is a leisurely 5 mile wander following the River Tyne on the Gateshead side starting at the Teams. At the beginning of the walk the paths (which are all tarmac) take us through a couple of small wooded areas (Gateshead Riverside Park) away from the river.
We will then cross over to Newcastle Quayside via the Swing Bridge (there are a few steps down onto the Quayside) we then head back over to Gateshead using the Millennium Footbridge where there are toilets at The Baltic Centre. The route then takes us past the Glasshouse along by the river passing pieces of art work to Dunston Staiths one of the last surviving coal staiths. We then follow the paths through the Staiths estate where the Staiths Cafe is situated, then back to the small wooded area and the cars.
The majority of the walk is flat but we will be walking down to the river and back up again on tarmac paths which have a short gradual incline/descent. The path by the river is a multi user route and we will cross one road.
Parking is in a large car park at the back of Eslington Primary School. The postcode NE8 2LS takes you to the houses on Rose Street, Gateshead, just short of the school (see pink cross on map) . If you travel from the A1 come off at the slip road for Newcastle and the Redheugh Bridge. Take the first slip road off to the left, then turn left onto the A1114 and then at the roundabout by the car garages turn right, drive past the petrol station and at the traffic lights turn right. (The Staiths estate is on your left), drive straight on through more traffic lights and the school is on your right past all the houses before open land.
