Ellem was one of the assembly points for the Scottish army in 1513 prior to the Battle of Flodden. Before the building of Ellemford Bridge (1860), people used ‘steppy stones’ and a ford to cross the river. The annual Ellemford Show is at the end of September and involves nearby communities.
This is a leisurely walk along the course of the River Whiteadder from Abbey St Bathans to Ellemford and back, following a mix of quiet roads, grassy paths and farm & forestry tracks. About 1 mile is through fields with long vegetation. Generally easy walking with moderate gradients. On our return refreshments are available at the Woodlands Café in Abbey St Bathans.
Circular walk, grade C+, leisurely. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.
