Overview

A walk full of features, this is a rewarding hike starting from the village of Goathland, home of the TV series 'Heartbeat'. We visit two waterfalls, gorgeous villages, wild moorland, steam trains (hopefully!) with plenty of opportunities for ice cream and potentially beer on the way.

We set off from Goathland and within a mile visit the waterfall of Mallyan Spout. From here we will then climb for about three miles - we  follow the river to the Beck Hole before ascending through Combs Woods. After the woodland we will go onto Egton High Moor - this could be muddy in places and there's a lot of gorse so us short wearing people will need to be brave as it could scratch a bit!

We make our descent down towards the pretty village of Egton Bridge, where we will take two sets of stepping stones across the river (a bridge is available if you prefer!) - we then pass through the Egton Estate following the railway line to the village of Grosmont. Here we can stop for an ice cream 🍦 and if we've timed it right, spot some steam trains at the train station 🚂

From Grosmont we follow the railway trail back to Beck Hole - here you can either join me and take a detour to Thomason Foss, another waterfall, by following a path (up and down and potentially a bit muddy!) - or you can wait for us at the cute pub in Beck Hole and enjoy a pint in their beer garden.

After Beck Hole it's a further mile or so back to Goathland, a gradual uphill along a decent track.

This walk has around 1600ft of ascent/descent - most of the uphill is at the start of the walk.
