This leisurely walk starts in the car park behind Selkirk Swimming Pool. We walk along beside the River Ettrick and through the community nature reserve before climbing through pleasant woodland to cross the B road to Ettrickbridge. Deer were seen here during the recce.
We climb through further woodland before returning towards Selkirk through fields (cattle-free during the recce), which offer long views over the countryside around Selkirk on our way to the Haining Estate. We explore the Haining's pathways before refreshments at the head of the loch,
The walk then passes various landmarks of Selkirk, the site of the old castle, the almost restored Haining house, the pre-reformation church, and the market square with its old courthouse, market cross and Halliwell's Close museum, before we descend by quiet streets and paths to the swimming pool.
There are no very difficult stretches, but there are some muddy areas and there is one difficult stile to climb, Boots and poles are therefore recommended. Selkirk has a range of cafes and local shops for post-walk refreshment or late Christmas shopping.
Circular walk, grade B, moderate. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.
