For those who don’t know – Monopoly is a board game based around street and station names of London. This is the first of two walks where we go to each named location.
There are two common routes that people follow – the first is the locations in sequential order. This makes for a longer and less coherent walk. The second is to do them in the order that minimizes the walk distance. This however leads to a dull walk and in particular finish. So we are doing our own new route!
We will meet at 10AM under the clock on the concourse at Waterloo station. Our first destination is Lambeth North – which apparently is “GO” on the Monopoly board. There is then a relatively long walk to the Old Kent Road before we head back into town to cross the iconic Tower Bridge. We stop for a quick break by some old remains of the original London Wall. We then tick off Vine Street, Fenchurch Street Station and Whitechapel before we head up through Brick Lane to Spitalfields Market where we will stop for lunch. In the afternoon we will go to Liverpool Street Station and Fleet Street before heading to Angel and Pentonville Road. On route we will have a brief detour to show everybody Charterhouse, Ely Place (and its 13th century church) and the Order of St John. Finally we head over to our last stop for today at Kings Cross Station. We will have only covered roughly a 3rd of the locations – but this is because a lot of them are clustered over in West London – we pick these up on Day 2 on Monopoly Board Walk 2 (coming soon!)
To keep everybody on their toes and eyes peeled we will not only be spotting the locations but also the board pieces (e.g. boat, iron, dog) and the other cards such as community chest and get out of jail free. We will distribute a crib sheet before as well so everybody can tick off as we progress across the two walks. We will in effect be playing Monopoly Bingo!
There are easy connections home from Kings Cross station where we expect to arrive at approx 4pm
