Leaving the car park, we head down Castle St, and then onwards for open country via Lime St. Here we’ll start one of two longer ascents (the more strenuous one being towards the end). This first stretch takes us up to Yarningdale and beyond where we may pause a while to enjoy the views over Moretonhampstead (weather permitting!). Next, we traverse Mardon Down, passing standing stones and cairns, including the “Giant’s Grave”. Afterward, we enter more sheltered woodlands walking westwards through Woodland Trust forests to Wooston Castle (an Iron Age Hillfort) and the Teign River. We continue along gradually descending until we come alongside the river before eventually arriving at Fingle Bridge via Charles Wood. Once there we turn due south climbing upwards (steep at first and then levelling off) to reach Butterdon Hill before a long gradual descent via Coombe Court before returning to our start point.
NB: The earlier start time is to allow us to make the most of the limited winter daylight on this longer walk.
If you would like to join this walk, please notify the leaders, preferably by email, so that they can inform you of any late changes to arrangements.
