Overview

This is a strenuous circular walk of 6.5 miles around the reservoirs and hills above Newhey.

Starting from the tram stop (or bus replacement bus stop on Shaw Road in Newhey if Trams suspended again) we leave the town through the hamlet of Haugh, then cross Huddersfield Road A640 and go up through woodland to the Ogden Reservoir. We take a route looking down on the Ogden, Kitcliffe and Piethorne Reservoirs, and then ascend the Pennine Bridleway to Rough Hey Cottage. We descend in stages from there to the reservoirs and walk alongside them on a private road past Spring Mill. Re-crossing Huddersfield Road we pass along the quiet Bethany Lane and descend to Haugh and retrace our steps to the start point.

The route uses footpaths, well-defined tracks and quiet roads. There are some short moderate ascents on the outward leg, and a longer steep ascent along the Pennine Bridleway near the half way point. There is a descent from there which is steep in places. There are six stiles on the route.
